ABOUT DAB+

What is DAB+?

DAB+ is digital terrestrial radio, meaning digital radio transmitted from the broadcasting tower to the receiver device. It is the successor to FM, the analog radio system. In addition to clear, digital sound without internet costs, DAB+ offers valuable extra services such as electronic program guides, colorful album covers, news, and traffic information.

What are the advantages of DAB+ reception?

More choice: With DAB+, multiple programs can be broadcast on a single frequency block. This more efficient use of terrestrial frequencies allows for a greater overall number of programs.
New offerings for personal taste: Thanks to this efficient distribution, new niche programs can also be offered, such as local information, classical music, or Schlager.
Digital reception independent of the internet: DAB+ reception incurs no costs and does not consume your internet data allowance. DAB+ can be received by any number of devices, simultaneously and without loss of quality.
Digital quality with modern transmission technology: DAB+ delivers clear digital sound, completely free of noise and with a stable audio profile: loud is loud and quiet is quiet.
Additional services in text and image: DAB+ allows the transmission of supplementary information alongside the program, including weather maps, program guides (EPG), and details such as news headlines or music track displays.
Uninterrupted listening thanks to excellent network coverage: DAB+ coverage exceeds 98 percent. This means that outdoors and on the move, radio can be received digitally via DAB+ across 98 percent of Luxembourg’s national territory. Full coverage is available along main routes.
Simple and convenient operation: No need to search for or remember frequencies, thanks to automatic station scanning.
Noise-free mobile transmission without frequency searching: A DAB+ car radio plays all national programs even during long journeys, at every new location, without manual frequency changes.

How can you receive DAB+?

To listen to radio via DAB+, you need a digital radio that supports DAB+. All current digital radios receive FM in addition to DAB+. When buying a radio, it’s best to ask specifically for the DAB+ standard. There are many hybrid devices that can receive audio signals through multiple distribution channels, such as DAB+, FM, and the internet. More information can be found at dabplus.lu/en/radios.

Why is DAB+ the new radio standard?

Analog radio transmission has long reached its limits. The available FM frequencies are fully occupied, meaning there is no way to broadcast new programs via FM. In addition, the digitization of the media world continues to advance. Radio must not remain an analog island (FM) in a sea of digital content. DAB+ is modern radio: it offers a greater variety of programs through digital signal transmission, multimedia additional services, and convenient ease of use.

Which programs can I receive with my DAB+ radio device?
  • Crooner Radio
  • Eldoradio
  • L’essentiel Radio
  • LOR’FM
  • Nostalgie Luxembourg
  • Opus 100,7
  • Radio 100,7
  • Radio ARA
  • Radio Latina
  • RTL Deutschlands Hit-Radio
  • RTL Radio Lëtzebuerg
  • Today Radio
What about my FM programs?

You can already buy a DAB+ radio today, as FM is included in almost all devices. This means you gain access to new programs while still listening to your favorite stations that have already switched to DAB+. Alternatively, you can continue listening to FM as before and switch later.

What is the difference between DAB+ and Internet radio?

DAB+ works without an internet connection and provides a robust and crisis-proof transmission path. Traditional radio, from transmitter to receiver, is a reliable source of information even when the internet is not available.

Does DAB+ cost extra?

No. Apart from the purchase cost of a DAB+-compatible radio device, there are no additional charges. Digital radio programs can be received free of charge.

What are additional services?

DAB+ can transmit not only audio signals but also other data such as text, images, and interactive elements like football scores, colorful album covers, weather maps, etc. This gives broadcasters the opportunity to offer multimedia services alongside “classic radio programs”:

DLS/DLS+ (Dynamic Label Service/Dynamic Label Service +): Text information accompanying the program, such as artist, song title, album name, etc., appears on the radio display, is stored (DLS+), and can be accessed at any time (DLS+).
EPG (Electronic Programme Guide): A detailed program overview and description gives you a clear view of the radio schedule.
SLS (Slideshow Service): Image information, such as station logos and album covers, appears on your radio display.
TPEG (Transport Protocol Experts Group): In addition to the radio program, current traffic information is transmitted more precisely, quickly, and comprehensively (compared to TMC).
RADIO VIS: Images matching the current program appear on your radio display.
FILE COLLECTOR: Enables reception and storage of program-related audio files via broadcast technology (no internet required).
JOURNALINE: Independent information can be accessed alongside the radio program, such as stock market data, sports results, or news.
BWS (Broadcast Web Site): You can access supplementary web pages directly on your radio display.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: Safety alerts and traffic information automatically interrupt, for example, when you are listening to a CD.

Will FM reception be discontinued?

Technically, DAB+ is the digital successor to analog FM reception via antenna. However, in Luxembourg there is neither a politically set date for switching off FM nor any political intention to discontinue FM reception. Norway and Switzerland, on the other hand, have already phased out FM, and other countries plan to do so in the coming years. When purchasing a new device, you should always ensure it supports the new DAB+ standard. Digital radios can always receive FM in addition to DAB+, so you are well prepared for the future.

DAB+ RECEPTION IN THE CAR

Can DAB+ also be received in the car?

Yes, DAB+ can also be received in the car. This is where many of the new multimedia additional services (features depend on the device) really shine, as well as the simplified program setting through automatic frequency search.

Is DAB+ standard in cars?

The European Electronic Communications Code (EECC) stipulates that every new car operated in the EU since 2021 must include a digital terrestrial receiver that allows DAB+ to be listened to.

Are there navigation systems with DAB+ reception?

Most car manufacturers offer combined systems with navigation and DAB+ radio reception for vehicles. These currently still use the TMC traffic system, which is transmitted via FM or data from the internet through a mobile connection.

Do I need an internet connection for DAB+ in the car?

No, DAB+ does not require an internet connection. The signal is transmitted via antenna, ensuring flawless reception. If you are driving through an area without mobile coverage, that’s no problem at all for your DAB+ device. You will still enjoy crystal-clear sound and up-to-date traffic information.

Can I retrofit my conventional car radio?

Depending on the age and model of the installed car radio, it can be retrofitted at a low cost. Many manufacturers offer suitable DAB+ adapters that are easy to install. These include a windscreen antenna or roof antenna and the corresponding adapter.

Why does DAB+ reception drop out during car journeys?

Although DAB+ provides nationwide coverage, white spots are still possible. If the program is available on FM in these areas, the car radio automatically switches without interruption thanks to “seamless blending”.

Can DAB+ programs from other countries be received in Luxembourg?

Yes, programs from neighboring countries can also be received in Luxembourg.
